MOTO3, SHELL ADVANCE MALAYSIAN GP: FIRST DAY ON THE SEPANG TRACK
IMPROVING FREE PRACTICE PERFORMANCES FOR THE SKY RACING TEAM VR46
BOTH RIDERS IMPROVE TIMES AND FEELING WITH THE BIKE BETWEEN THE FIRST AND THE SECOND SESSION
FENATI MANAGES TO KEEP A GOOD PACE DESPITE THE ABSENCE OF SLIPSTREAMS
BAGNAIA COMES OUT WELL FROM A REAR TIRE PROBLEM THAT HAD SLACKENED HIS PACE IN THE FIRST RUN
Milan, October 24, 2014. Positive signals for the Sky Racing Team VR46 on the first day of free practice at Sepang, with both riders improving their times and performances between the first and the second free practice session. Romano Fenati was able to find a good race pace right from the start of the morning practice. In the second session, the Italian rider improved
his time further by bringing it down under the 2’15 threshold (from 2’15.123 to 2’14.781), despite the absence of slipstreams. His was the 12th best final time, right behind his teammate, Francesco Bagnaia.
Pecco’s improvement between the first and the second run was even more evident. The rider from Turin was struggling to find the right pace at the outset, hampered by a problem with the rear tire, but his performance significantly grew in the last part when he scored his fastest lap right at end of the second free practice session. He clinched the 11th best final time, improving it by more than one and a half second (from 2’16.354 to 2’14.713).
Sky-VR46 Sports Management: “It’s been a good first day. Romano pushed hard even when he found himself alone without slipstreams. This is something really positive for us as it gives us hope. The bike is not in top condition yet but there is still time to improve it and so we are expected to make it ahead of qualifying. Good results for Pecco as well, although this morning he had a problem with a tire, that maybe was a little bit worn out from the start and that affected the whole first session on track. In the second round he pushed very hard, he pulled off a great time and tomorrow he will have to keep working like that”.
ROMANO FENATI: “It was quite a positive second session as I nearly always run on my own and despite that I was able to improve a lot, especially in the last run. The bike improved as well so we are confident about tomorrow’s qualifying, all the necessary conditions to make a good performance are there”.
FRANCESCO BAGNAIA: “The FP2 session was positive for us, given the faulty rear tire in the first session had damaged our performance a bit. Once the problem was fixed, in the second session we pushed quite hard and tomorrow we’ll have to build on today’s great job. The bike is okay and there should be no problems”.
